Discord Phone Verification — Skip Using Your Real Number

You click a server invite and Discord says you need to verify a phone number before you can chat. Or Discord asks for a phone after flagging your account during its anti-spam checks. Either way, you may not want to attach your personal mobile number to a gaming or community account. This guide explains when Discord requires phone verification, how to use a one-time virtual number for it, and how to keep your account safe afterwards.

Why does Discord ask for phone verification?

Discord asks for phone verification mainly for two reasons: a server owner has set the highest verification level, which requires members to have a verified phone, or Discord's own systems want extra assurance about an account, for example after unusual activity. Phone verification is a common anti-spam gate, because each number can only be linked to a limited number of accounts.

Can you use a virtual number for Discord?

Yes, a virtual number can work for Discord if it receives the SMS and Discord accepts it, but acceptance is not guaranteed. Discord's support documentation has stated that VoIP numbers may not work, and Discord may also refuse numbers that are already linked to another account. Start with a country that has good stock on the price list, and if Discord refuses the number, cancel and try another. The country of your phone number does not limit which servers you can join.

What should you do if Discord rejects the number?

If Discord rejects the number, check the exact message, because each one points to a different fix:

• "Invalid phone number." Check the country code and digits first. If they are right, Discord has refused the number; cancel the pending order and pick another country.
• "This phone number is already in use." The number is linked to another Discord account. Cancel and choose a different number.
• No SMS arrives. Use Discord's resend option, then wait. The order waits up to 20 minutes and is refunded to your balance if it expires without a code.

How can you protect your privacy on Discord?

A separate number keeps your personal mobile out of Discord's records, but your wider privacy depends on your settings too. Review who can send you direct messages and friend requests, turn off contact syncing if you do not want your address book matched to Discord accounts, and think carefully about which connections, such as gaming or streaming accounts, you show on your profile. Because the verification number is not your personal one, it cannot be used to find your other accounts through contact matching.

Can you use one number for several Discord accounts?

Generally, no. Discord links a phone number to one account at a time, which is part of why phone verification works as an anti-spam gate. If you try to add a number that is already on another account, Discord tells you it is in use, and moving it usually means removing it from the first account. For a second legitimate account, such as a separate account for moderating a work community, use a different number. What should you not use a virtual number for on Discord?

Do not use a virtual number to get around a ban, to create alternate accounts for raids or spam, or to evade a server's moderation.
